Shield Lands Campaign, Greyhawk, 540 CY

We are beginning a new campaign set in the Shield Lands in 540 CY. The campaign will use 1e AD&D, so the original Dungeon Master’s Guide, Player’s Handbook, and Monster Manual will be the primary texts. Additional materials may be added in by the DM, but by and large, we will stick to the classic Greyhawk canon.

Players should all be natives of the Shield Lands. Typical Shieldlanders are mostly of Oeridian stock, often with Flannish blood, but there remain a few mostly Flan peoples as well, who are looked down upon by the Oeridians. Druids will all be Flan or Oeridian-Flans. Elves should be Wild Elves, though Grey Elves are possible with a good back story. Halflings are common, but Dwarves are exceptionally rare. Half-orcs are not allowed, because of the vast distrust that Shieldlanders have of them. Other races are possible if they have a convincing backstory. The Shield Lands value Paladins highly, and all Paladins must be of the Order of Holy Shielding. Rangers and Druids are highly regarded by the Flan, Elves, and halflings. The region leans heavily towards Lawful Good, so please don’t take any evil characters without express permission from the DM. Thieves should be circumspect, and human Clerics should worship either the Flannish or Oeridian pantheons.

For character sheets, I recommend this one by Doug Easterly, as I deem it the most metal I have seen in a while. If you wish to praise at the altar of Doug, his original post also has the sheet.

Settlements in the region and their relative size are detailed in Anna B. Meyer’s map, but the population of keeps and castles was not detailed on that map, so I am setting those limits. Note that Admundfort is listed in the 1980 Greyhawk Gazetteer as having a population of 15,800 but Anna’s map would limit that to 10,000 maximum. I’ll be generating the population of the settlements separately, and will post those later. Also be aware that there while 30 settlements are listed for the Shield Lands, there are at least twice that number of unlisted hamlets and thorps, so if you would like to create a thorp of your own, just let me know what it is called and where it is located. Also notice that I’ve added the settlement Yellowreach (later the center of the Plague Fields) as a small town. In doing this, I’m following Anna’s designation again.

This campaign starts twenty-six years before the first Greyhawk Gazetteer. I’m using Anna B. Meyer’s map of 576 CY, so the Principality of Redhand is showing, but in our campaign, it has not yet seceded and is still the Province of Alhaster, part of the Shield Lands. Shieldlanders in this age are as bull-headed as ever, determined to prove their worth in fighting the evil of the Horned Society and the Warfields, and whatever aid Iuz lends either, as well as standing firm against the Bandit Kingdoms and the monstrosities of that region.

There is a larger version.
